Illness and Community: An Inclusive Concept of Treatment for Breast Cancer – Betsy Tyson-Smith. The diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer is a formidable experience both physically and mentally. In order to manage the side effects of difficult medicinal care, emotional stress, those with breast cancer should be provided with focused coping therapies and support to help them heal outside the hospital setting. A supportive community, adjacent to the outdoors, offering integrative therapies and group support provides healing, connection with others.
Ten years after her first diagnosis for breast cancer in 1990, Betsy Tyson-Smith co-founded the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden, in Harvard, MA. a non-profit providing integrated healing therapies for breast cancer patients. Betsy is a certified Mental Health Counselor, with an MA in Psychology and in a private practice for 40 years.
